To her, he sought to portray himself as highly cultured and refined by discussing his love for classical music and literature – not unlike the fictional character Hannibal Lecter. But suffering from what he described as a “32-year-long obsession”, Sagawa killed Ms Hartevelt. He then began to devour her over three days, during which time he even went to the cinema with his classmates. He decided to dispose the remaining parts after they began to decompose. He then stuffed them into two large suitcases, took a taxi to Bois de Boulogne park where he attempted to dump her corpse in a lake. He was soon arrested by the French police and thrown into a mental institution, with his wealthy father providing a lawyer for his defence. PHOTO: AFP Two years later, the judge found him legally insane and unfit to stand trial. Sagawa was deported to Japan, where he was warded in the Matsuzawa Psychiatric Hospital upon arrival. Japan was also under public pressure to form a case against him after domestic experts ruled him sane. Yet their French counterparts, considering the case closed and charges dropped, said they could not provide his case files as they were sealed. He checked himself out of hospital and had lived a free man, displaying little signs of remorse and often going on the record about his desires to eat human flesh again. In 2010, he said he had “graduated” from white women and was lusting after Japanese women, especially those from Okinawa. He has also confessed to getting more intense desires around summer, when women “start wearing less and showing more skin”.
